Daryl Morey: might NOT be a liar

“Daryl Morey is a Liar” the famous words on the bottle service sign that James Harden paid for last September. Now in July we sit here wondering was James Harden telling the truth?
Paul George is a Sixer. Daryl Morey’s plan worked. What was thought as the big domino for the NBA offseason has finally fallen and Sixers fans finally have something to be excited about after a rough series of events since going up 3-2 on the Celtics in the second round in 2023. Morey planned for this offseason with the large amount of expiring contracts he acquired in the Harden trade and at the deadline. His goal was always to maximize cap flexibility and to bring a 3rd star to Philly and he delivered on that goal.

Paul George will be an absolute amazing fit for the Sixers as they will slot him right into the spot that Tobias Harris famously played while robbing the organization of $500k per game for the last 5 years. George’s ability to shoot and defend will complement stars Embiid and Maxey perfectly and he will most likely be the 3rd option for the team. A major upgrade over Mr. Crumbl Cookies. By the way, I'm still waiting for my cookie from Tobias.

The Sixers have also made a few other moves to round out their roster and may not be done yet. Most importantly they were able to bring back Kelly Oubre Jr. who seemed to have finally found a home in this league during the past year. Kelly returned on a team friendly deal and will offer length and defense that the Sixers desperately need. Known Celtics-killer Caleb Martin was also signed to a 4 year deal with around $35M guaranteed. Here’s 5 Minutes of Caleb Martin Cooking the Celtics to welcome him to the squad.

Martin will add even more shooting to a team that might have the best shooting Sixers fans have ever seen. His playoff success (especially against the Celtics) will help the Sixers massively as they need all the playoff experience they can get. They also signed Eric Gordon to a minimum contract and brought back Andre Drummond on a 2 year deal to back up Joel Embiid. Gordon will add even more shooting and Drummond will play a crucial role in the rebounding game as well as on the nights Embiid is sitting (which we know is a lot).
What’s next for Daryl? The last move the Sixers can really make is to resign KJ Martin to a balloon payment (as they have his bird rights and therefore can go over cap to sign him). This will allow them to trade KJ Martin and be able to bring back more money in a potential trade. Other names people have been mentioning are Davis Bertans and Marcus Morris Sr. The Sixers still need another forward to fill out this roster. Kyle Lowry could also return on a minimum.
It will be interesting to see what Morey does to close out this offseason, but it must be noted that he has done a phenomenal job so far. The Sixers currently are listed at +800 to win the NBA Finals which is second to only the Celtics who are +295, so it’s clear Vegas believes the Sixers have had a good offseason. Whether those odds reflect the moves Morey made, or simply Tobias Harris not being on the roster anymore Sixers fans must be pleased with the current outlook of the team. Only time will tell, but for now all Sixers fans can do is Trust The Process.
